Winter Solstice : John Chamberlain and George Rickey
The exhibition pairs two of the most respected abstract sculptors and explores form and balance in the modern idiom. Both used heavy materials to propel their artistic expression. Chamberlain championed utilizing parts of deconstructed automobiles to transform abstract expressionism into a stationary three dimensional object. Rickey on the other hand elevated the use of industrial materials to a more delicate expression, and championed kinetic sculpture, where large heavy objects would be propelled to move from the slightest circulation of air. The materials of Chamberlain and Rickey were similar, as was their dedication to influencing their viewers’ spacial awareness, but their formal approach to sculpting prompts an important exploration into the various states industrial materials can take.
