Cordy Ryman, Almond Mask, 2016, Acrylic and shellac on wood, 20 ½ x 21 x 1 ½ inches
The painters in this show use gesture or action as a starting point for their work. This process of painting captures a slice of life that abstractly reveals a block of space-time. Timeless space is a private, transformative place where all substantial psychological, physical and perceptual change can be inwardly initiated by the artist, yogi, shaman or magician, to escape all cultural influences from the past, present or future. The authenticity of mark making shared by the artists in this show unites them and is achieved through maintaining a gaze while painting which permits more identification with the object. This manner of working leaves clues to and illuminates the individuality of the artists.
