John McCracken

Biography

 

John McCracken (born 1934)

Born in Berkeley, California, he is known as one of the founders of West Coast Minimalism. He attended the California College of Arts and Crafts where he studied with Gordon Onslow-Ford and Tony DeLap. In 1966, he began a teaching career that included theUniversity of California, Irvine, the University of Nevada and and the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 1966, he also developed what became his signature sculptural forms: tall leaning planks made from wood, coated with fiberglass and then painted. In 1994, he and his artist wife, Gail Barringer, moved to New Mexico.
