Richter was one of 80 intellectuals, scientists, athletes, politicians, and artists, who let themselves be photographed behind a copy of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for a prize-winning advertising campaign for the newspaper with the slogan “There is always a clever head behind it”.
For the present work, the artist overpainted the photo taken for the ad. The hand visible on
the lower right is Gerhard Richter’s.
